Two answers for this.
Up until now, no. It hasn't had any use in the slightest in the fights against Chinjao, Doflamingo or Katakuri. It's effectively been a special effect.
In the future, it should ge a second level of usage, like the other colours. With CoC becoming a dime a dozen, that'll be the more unique thing about it, and very, very few characters will have it out of the CoC users. That second use should be useful in some way and justify the CoC hype.

It's unexplained at the moment, we haven't really seen Luffy seriously clash with someone with significantly weaker CoC, who knows how that actually functions considering when both have CoC it adds to the clash. Logically speaking if you don't have CoC to combat this part of the clash you should be at a disadvantage,and that is only first stage CoC.
Considering CoO and CoA have both been expanded upon with rare evolved forms and added to Luffy's arsenal I don't doubt that the most hyped haki has a further stage also.

As it stands, nope. All CoC has been used for in a fight thus far to make things look cool and flashy. Kata vs Luffy and Doffy vs Luffy are your examples. In other cases, it's just to make a character have a badass moment. Shanks on Whitebeard's ship, Luffy against those 50k fishmen. In actual assistance in combat, it's utterly useless. Perhaps advanced CoC, if that's gonna be a thing, will be different. But right now, no reason to believe so.

however your weapon does not have to be coated for haki to be in use
oden swords arent coated here and we know he used ryou
the black sparks upon impact seem to indicate he did
but am willing to hear the general opinion of the community on this.
