Sanji has always been a couple of notches behind Luffy and Zoro. It's alright, he is a decent fighter in his own right, but he is far behind the top duo. It's been obvious since his defeat against VC Gin, his difficulties against Kuroobi and getting manhandled by Arlong, his extreme diff fight against Bon Clay (32 millions) who is miles weaker than Daz Bones (75 million) and through his weak portrayal during Skypiea being bounced around by Satori. And it hasn't gotten any better since the timeskip.

Sanji would probably have lost against Gin, Mr 1, Wiper, Ohm, Shura, Kaku, Steroid Hody Jones, Smoker, Vergo, Pica, Hakuba, Bege, Inu, Neko, Cracker.

Does that make him weak? No. He is the 4th strongest Straw Hat after Luffy, Zoro and Jinbei. Quite a great feat in the grand scheme of things.

So the point is that Sanji does not HAVE to get good fights all the time to show how good he is. Because he does not even aspire to be an incredibly good fighter.

For Sanji's character, his fighting skills are a means to an end. Zoro and Luffy on the other hand have an actual interest in becoming better fighters. Zoro's entire goal centers around it and Luffy, as the captain and aspiring to be Pirate King, has to fight the bad guys that are in the way of his personal dream.
The only reason Sanji needs to fight is because the SHs are pirates who live in an arguably very violent world and have to be able to defend themselves and get ahead.


So yes, there is some kind of gap but actually the gap is not important from a character perspective.
Sanji is definitely atronger than any of the normal citizens in the OP world so we can't say he is weak.
He is a cook who specializes in improvig his cooking and seems to have a great sense of professional pride, as seen in WCI when he cares more about satisfying Big Mom's tastebuds as in her being a "customer", than potentially taking her out the "dirty" way, aka adding poison to the cake.

Sanji being a cook does not mean he is not a great fighter yea.

But it's just not a strenght driven ambition. Unlike, let's say Zoro, whom we know needs to become a top tier to achieve his dream and therefore is guaranteed to make it as a top tier, but the story doesn't require Sanji to be that great of a fighter.

So Sanji doesn't really NEED to be a top tier because it's not his goal to reach that level and he would be perfectly fine as YC1 level by the end of the story (which would be already amazing considering he's the 3rd strongest), but that doesn't make him a bad fighter, does it?

Now we are seeying Luffy & Zoro pitted agaisnt top tiers and that is because we are approaching the end of the series and they need to step up hard unlike Sanji who doesn't need to evolve that fast.

When one of them consistently gets into more fights with stronger opponents, gets better protrayal within the crew, againt opponents and in the world itself, you should understand that there's a decent gap between the two characters.

The other is also used and seen more as comic relief, has less will and ambition (massive in the OP world) and is generally used as a hype tool.

Even the Baratie scene that people use against Sanji when he watches Luffy and Zoro, even that one is misinterpreted with Zeff saying that he knows a fool ( as in Sanji ) who has that same spear called ambition that he put to the side for his sake.

Yes, him not being only a fighter like Zoro means that just with training and fighting, he would fall behind. Pre time skip Oda just pushed Sanji to keep up without an explanation because he wants the M3 to be a thing.

Post time skip, he worked into the story an explanation, aka the Raid Suit.

Raid Suit is there so that Sanji can keep up with less training and less fighting. It's a tool that can be upgraded outside of training and fighting.

It's a tool that Sanji can choose to put to the side and cook, or wear and become a better fighter that can keep up with his fellow M3 members to the extent Oda intended him to keep up pre time skip, as well as going forward.

Zoro already half blind so I'm pretty sure he doesn't over rely on his vision... I'm pretty sure that will come into play if he fights Shiryu.

Well and also basic CoO training as we saw with Luffy is managing to dodge without vision, pretty sure anyone with decent CoO can fight an invisible dude.
