Chapter Discussion The GOAT Enters the Story: Rocks D. Xebec Appreciation Thread

#43
Rocks was a loser because he couldn't control other conquerors like him; which, at the same time, is what makes Roger above him.

Nobody considered him the greatest thing: Big Mom explicitly insults him, Whitebeard is angry at Rocks ordering him around, Kaidou doesn't envision him at the top of those who can fight him and Shiki laughs at the idea of following him.

He was so bad at handling wild beasts that Whitebeard didn't want Oden aboard just because of his bad experiences under Rocks.

Yet... Roger not only had conquerors following him loyally but was respected and even admired by the very same monsters that laughed at Rocks. That's something Rocks will never be able to achieve.

Xebec and Roger are both anarchist, but they are totally opposite of what they believe in. Xebec is literally the embodiment of chaos, no rules no order, while Roger believe in harmony, connection with other people, and the values of others.

He single handedly inciting the thought of overthrowing the WG, a powerful faction that can pose a threat to the WG and take over the world. He opened the window to show his crew what this faction is capable of doing and his crew learnt from him. Later after his death, few of the crew followed this method to pursue what he failed to achieve and also cause all sort of problem to WG. That's how the Yonko system is created. Later after Roger dies and given the rise of great pirate era, all of them also carry this kind of idea. A relentless conflict with the pirates ever since he declared war on Imu.

Since the latest chapter dropped, I’ve seen plenty of powerscaling debates and agenda posts, but not enough threads appreciating just how brilliant of a character Xebec really is. This character single-handedly resurrected a dead forum back to life! Fans are already calling this one of the best post-timeskip chapters. Once again, Oda reminded us why he is a master of his craft.

Design
Xebec has an awesome design. From the moment he appears, he exudes raw, explosive energy. His wild, spiked hair looks like he is about to go Super Saiyan. His physique and attire are monstrous - a far cry from his son.

A Man With Zero Chill
Rocks D Xebec doesn't play games. He enters every fight with Michael Jordan's killer instinct - take everything personally, crush everything in his path. There is no compassion or teaching moment. You are in the way, you will be crushed. When child Loki stood in his way, he didn't hesitate to give him a cold blooded beatdown.

The Freest Man on the Sea
Luffy believes the freest man in the sea is the Pirate King. If that's true, then there has never been a better Pirate King than Rocks D Xebec. While Luffy's freedom means adventure with friends, Xebec's freedom means tearing down the entire system - nobody to rule you ever again.

Rocks enters the land of Gods, kills an admiral as a side quest and finds the most untouchable figure in the world. This man delivers the threat and walks away with no fucks given =>

The Greatest Revolutionary
Pirates don't attack World Government. Xebec? He marched to Marijoas alone before forming a crew. People call Dragon the most wanted man on the planet, the greatest revolutionary. But compared to what Xebec did, Dragon's revolution is child's play. Man directly threatened the highest authority in the world while Dragon is probably still staring at East Blue wondering where to start =>

He who challenged the world
Xebec wanted to crush the navy. Pretty sure this is the first time a One Piece character has outright said they intend to destroy the Navy. Whitebeard attacked Marineford, but he was on a suicide mission. Harald thought Xebec's enemies were too big. But Xebec didn't flinch. This man had the guts like no other.

The Unstoppable All-Rounder
Was there anything this man couldn't do? I can picture this dude shredding guitars like a rockstar, clearing a poker table against the best gambler and take over a dance floor like he owns the place!

Rocks D. Xebec - The Pirate we thought Roger was
After just one chapter, many readers are saying Xebec is what we all wanted Roger to be. Its not just strength - its also his presence. The man oozes charisma and swag - something Roger never quite had. While Roger begged rivals for help and tiptoed through Yonko territory, Xebec walks straight into hell and dares it to fight back. Just GOAT things!

All that strength and so called charisma only to get zero respect by his crew and get totally abandoned in a first major battle

In the end none willing to acknowledge his very existence including those was on his side. Dude's forgotten like a background character

Roger was more respected. Xebec's crew neither trusted, nor respected him. It is also implied Rocks got backstabbed, or at the very least, his associates didn't care about him biting the dust.

On the other hand, you had bonafide top tiers; Rayleigh, Gaban, later Oden, who deeply loved, respected and admired Roger, same goes for Shanks, who is a Yonko himself and holds Roger in high regards, going as far as to betting his arm on the boy who said the same words Roger said.

And in the end, Xebec died as a nobody while Roger became the Pirate King who announced the great era of piracy. Ok, cool, Xebec went into the flower room and gave Imu empty threats but that's about it. Which doesn't mean Xebec isn't an awesome character, but I don't think it makes Roger look worse.

What do you mean he couldnt control them? Last chapter I saw the great WB in a feast like another run in the mill crewmate. We have seen "shut up WB" when WB tried to lecture Rocks about beating kids.

Roger's subordinates and Rocks' subordinates arent same. Rocks had subordinates who was said Roger's equal or on Roger's level. Rocks group was way more difficult to handle. Why did Roger need Garp's help if the Rocks crew was so disfunctional?

But they weren't his "subordinates". They most likely were just associates sharing similar goals. They didn't trust, nor respect him. On the other hand we had Rayleigh, who in his prime was in the same ballpark as a Yonko, stalling Kizaru when old and rusty and having Garp compare him to Whitebeard, by saying it's madness to face two legends at the same time. With Gaban also being not far off in power. Then comes Oden, who is put up there as Kaido's top 5 who also was amazed by Roger and admired him.

Roger was the superior man in terms of character. Whitebeard was literally talking about the man Roger awaits, when telling Blackbeard he is not him, not the man Roger waited for. Him becoming Pirate King, starting the era of piracy, wearing the strawhat which seems to have deep significance for the narrative of the story, with Joyboy literally wearing a strawhat - who knows, perhaps it was even the same strawhat that was passed to Roger, then to Shanks, then to Luffy, who is Joyboy 2.0 (while the giant strawhat in Marijoa could be a red herring).

Xebec was a great character, but more like a savage, a rowdy. Aiming high but falling deep in the end.
