Hypothetically speaking, Yamato nay sayers main argument is that Oden's journal contains end game revelations.. What if for example, there was no mention of Laughtale in it, would it validate Yamato as the next Strawhat?..
No, the reason Yamato is not a good potential strawhat goes far beyond just that parameters

I will give you some of the reasons and compare those with Carrot:

Reason 1:

Each strawhats were changed by their adventure with Luffy or because of Luffy. This is a fundamental narrative rule. Right now, Yamato has yet to be changed by the current event or Luffy's actions.

Carrot innocence on the other hand, has been demolished by her journey. Meaning that there is the start of a change for her.

Reason 2:

Yamato has no dynamic with the crew. It's necessary to have a good dynamic with the crew as a strawhat.

Carrot on the other hand had clearly an entire dynamic with them.

Reason 3:

Everything in Yamato's current character arc is pointing to her being a protector of Wano. Yes she stated that she wanted to sail with Luffy, but her actions are making an opposite statement : Protecting Wano.

Carrot on the other hand may have almost no development, but her storyline is still arched toward the premisse of becoming a pirate
(cf chapter 1006)

Reason 4:

There is STILL no setup regarding the future post of Yamato on the ship. Oda could easily do that, even in a war, but right now there is nothing, no setup, no presentation of any capacity for any postwhatsoever. The thing is: ALL the strawhat have a postand those shadowed early in the story and the introduction of the character.

Right now, the parcimony principle must be applied to Yamato: She has no place on the Sunny.

On the other hand, Carrot was litterally introduced as lookout in the story. Her role was defined clearly later on and this even led to Carrot having a Shining Nakama action, another parameter that Yamato does not have.

----

Take note that everything that I stated here could change for Yamato or for Carrot. But at the current state of the story, not only Yamato has small chances to join the crew, but Carrot is still higher is the probability board.

Man, imagine what happens if Carrot joins the crew. This character was nowhere to be seen for the past year or so meanwhile Yamato had her own plot.

The lack of development is irrelevant if the development in the story is enough. Same for the lack of presence in the story. Do you feel like Sabo is irrelevant because he was not presented in the story for a long time ?

Probably not. That's why judging the character's importance in the future on the amount of presence is irrelevant.

We don't feel like Sabo is irrelevant cuz his Luffy's Brother and the 2nd command to the one and only Monkey D. Dragon, he doesn't need panel time to justify his importance, we already have all we need in his relationship with the people around him and how he stands next to them, Sabo is doing the same thing that Shanks is doing, just with less hype. The fuck does Carrot have that we can so easily excuse her Dogshit Panel time? Pedro's Will? Don't make me laugh, comparing Sabo to a grass eating lawnmower...

What do we have for Carrot? All the setup of whole cake and the words of both Pedro and Perospero. If Carrot was a irrelevant Character, Oda would have never bother taking the time to make Pedro say "one day you will understand why the survival of Luffy is important" and Pero say a whole monologue to Carrot to finish on "Go eat some grass, that's were you belong"

Those are called setups. Those are clews that there is a narrative purpose for Carrot beyond her simple presence.

Sabo was a mere example, it works for any other characters like Vivi for example.

All the setup of whole cake
That arc ended four real-life years ago and Big Mom herself has been defeated, anything set up in that arc is fully resolved now.
and the words of both Pedro and Perospero
Pedro said the same generic bullshit that countless other mentors have said to characters of note in this series, and Perospero kicked her Sulong ass with ease, so those are ALSO completely finished plot lines. Anything else??

On the contrary, the fact that both those lines are connected shows that narratively, Oda is not done with Carrot. What Oda did with Carrot is a famous narrative trope : putting words of defeat and discouragment into the mind of a "good" protagonist, words that will come back later to the narrative to prove that the protagonist is meant to be the exact opposite.

Oda is doing that all the times with his villains.

But let's put that to the test:

If Carrot ends up having at least ONE panel in the following chapters focused on her as a protagonist and not just another character part of the mink tribe..

It will prove that Oda is not done with her as a protagonist.

So let's see what the future holds...
