It's called a Pre fight clash.

- Zoro had one with Kaku in Water 7
- Luffy had one with Lucci in Water 7
- Luffy had one with Katakuri at the Tea Party
- Luffy had one with Doffy multiple times before their final fight

I can't remember others, but they do exist. It's just a big part of set-up. Sometimes Oda doesnt follow through, though usually he does.

These guys think that perhaps not even Base Kaido is capable to harm the Red Suit lol. Funnily Sanji most likely lacks the AP to inflict King plenty of damage unless Oda pulled off a shenanigan.
